The battery starts the engine, delivering 200-600 amps briefly. Post-startup, the alternator takes over, driven by the engine’s belt. Its rotor spins, inducing AC in the stator, rectified to DC at 13.5-14.5 volts. This output—100-150 amps in most cars—first recharges the battery, depleted by cranking. A healthy battery accepts 10-20 amps initially, tapering as it nears full charge.

Simultaneously, the alternator powers accessories. Headlights draw 10 amps, the AC compressor 15-20, and the radio 5-10. Total demand might hit 80 amps, leaving headroom for charging. The voltage regulator balances this load, adjusting rotor current to maintain stable voltage. At idle, output dips, but modern alternators compensate with efficient stator designs.

A failing alternator starves both systems. If it can’t exceed accessory draw—say, 60 amps versus 80—the battery drains, dimming lights or stalling the engine. Overcharging, conversely, cooks the battery. Testing output (13.8 volts at idle) or listening for belt slip reveals issues.

Maintenance ensures performance. A worn belt or loose pulley cuts power; corrosion at terminals chokes flow.
