A generator, common in cars until the 1960s, produces direct current (DC) using a commutator and brushes. Driven by the engine’s belt, its armature (a rotating coil) spins within a magnetic field, generating electricity. Output was modest—20-50 amps—and dropped at low RPMs, like idling, leaving batteries undercharged. Generators were heavy, mechanically complex, and prone to wear; their brushes and commutator needed frequent replacement, often every 30,000 miles.

An alternator, introduced in the 1960s, generates alternating current (AC) via a rotor and stator, then converts it to DC with a rectifier. Its rotor—either an electromagnet or permanent magnet—spins inside stator coils, producing three-phase AC. Diodes rectify this to DC, delivering 100-150 amps in modern cars. Unlike generators, alternators maintain output at low speeds, thanks to higher rotor RPMs (2-3 times crankshaft speed) and efficient design.

Efficiency is a major differentiator. Generators waste energy as heat in their commutator, while alternators leverage lightweight materials and brushless options, cutting losses. A generator might produce 12 volts at 2,000 RPM, but an alternator hits 14 volts at 600 RPM—ideal for stop-and-go traffic. This scalability suits modern cars’ growing electrical demands, from heated seats to advanced driver systems.

Maintenance also favors alternators. Generators’ brushes wore out quickly, and their commutators sparked, degrading performance. Alternators use slip rings (in brushed designs) or no brushes at all, lasting 100,000-150,000 miles versus a generator’s 50,000-mile lifespan. Repairing a generator often meant rewinding coils; alternators are more modular, with replaceable rectifiers and regulators.

For enthusiasts, alternators offer upgrade potential—high-output models (200+ amps) support custom mods, impossible with generators. While generators linger in vintage restorations, alternators’ reliability, power, and adaptability make them the modern standard.
